Now I am a hairstylist and a MUA I went to school paid all that money I liked the school I went to and everything. When I was attending school my instructors even said it will be different and all the rules that we do here, sanitation, and everything else will be questioned once we left (especially for the black ones who was going to work somewhere the majority was black or black owned period). I didn't believe it until now, man I am just floored by how all these places I have been have just let all the stuff we study for go away like that.
Now alot of stuff you do change when you live cosmetology school you learn different ways to do thing but the basic for me should always be there. But we will be getting into what I mean in a second.
I remember being in school and both white and black instructors were telling me that alot of black stylist want continue to be sanitary, look nice, keep their hair and makeup done, wash combs and brushes after every use etc. Because they were going to leave that school environment of rules and expectations of being all those things you had no choice but to do and begin working with and under people who didn't follow those rules anymore. I was even told the vision I had for my self and the environment I saw my self in will not accept me because I was a bigger girl lol (that turned out to not be true to) except if I wanted to go to an all black salon well (shop) what they called it it would get excepted it more there.
I don't want to go to an all black salon hell I don't want to go to a all white salon I want to work with everyone and that's real I'm not trying to take no opportunity from myself to work with stylist who have been here longer then me and can teach me and guide me through this business no matter what race, color, religion, none of that stuff.
But I'm writing this blog post because I have been looking around my area for a salon to work in and it has just been such a struggle, so now I find myself going further from where I live to find different space or companies to work at.
For example Of What I have Been getting around my neighborhood of salon/shops
1. kids in the salon
2. Not Being clean in the salon
3. Sanitaion Jars/Bowls to put dirty combs and other tools in to get washed later
4. Owners coming in for the first time of me seeing them and meeting them with there hair just everywhere not done jogging pants on just not looking some what of presentable to be a owner to me.
5. No towels
6. No washer to wash towels, matter a fact hand washing towels or going to there house just to wash old towels that should've been washed before the next day came
7. No showing up on time
I mean I can go on and on and on but you guys get the drift lol its just haven't been a good experience, Now do everyone start like this somewhere un tamed and worked to build your clientele but eventually go somewhere they like but fall in the habit of what the un tamed place was doing maybe, or that's no excuse just keep it moving keep looking in other places until you find somewhere comfortable?
